The Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii announce the eighth annual Prevent Child Abuse Golf Tournament will be held at the Volcano Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 7. Friends board Vice President Jay Kimura invites all golfers to help “The Friends” raise funds to support the needs of abused children.
The Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii was organized more than 20 years ago to support a coordinated multi-disciplinary response to children who have been victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, exploitation, neglect or have witnessed violent crime. Proceeds raised from this popular tournament go to children in East Hawaii to help them rebuild their lives.
The Friends group, a private nonprofit, works in coordination with the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii.
“We raise funds so that we can provide emergency assistance and enhancement programs for children of abuse and also help to support training for professionals,” explained Kimura, who is chairing this year’s Friends Golf Tournament. “Another important function of the Friends is to help maintain a child-friendly center where these children can be professionally interviewed in a non-office-type setting.
“We believe that helping abused children with enhancements such as hula lessons, soccer shoes and out-of-school tutoring lessons can make a difference in their lives at a critical time. We hope to help break the cycle of child abuse and ‘help a victim be a child again,’” said Kimura.
