This free fun day for all ages will bring communities together to enjoy live music, activities and entertainment and help build and support the Hilo-Hamakua coastal communities.

Come and check out the variety of vendors offering demos, presentations, and practical information on resources that promote the well-being of our keiki, our kupuna and everyone else. While having fun and learning, enjoy ono refreshments from the concession. Homemade chili and rice, nachos with chili, hot dogs/chili dogs, pickled vegetables, beverages to quench your thirst, and the frozen goodness of Bradda Pops!
Pick up some Kawamoto Bento fundraiser tickets for $5. Pick-up dates for bentos at the Kawamoto Store in Hilo are Oct. 1-6. Proceeds will assist in securing equipment and will benefit and support the programs and activities offered at Kulaimano Community Center.
Love garage sales? Come to the same-day community garage sales at homes throughout the Kulaimano Subdivision. Each garage sale home will provide you with a list of participating homes, so you know just where to go for those sought-out bargains! Homes will distribute lucky drawing tickets to drop off at the Kulaimano Community Center for random prize drawings throughout the day and provide the opportunity to enjoy the fun activities.
Live music will be provided by the Ol’ School Band, Pauole, Yokoyama Sisters and Ben Kaili. Activities include a casting contest, the fastest ball contest, farthest ball kick contest, two baseball games (starts at 10 a.m.), a keiki fishing booth and the ever-popular water slide and jumping castle for the keiki.
Demonstrations and presentations include Cooking Healthy, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Kenpo Karate, Zumba, Financial Literacy and Home Security.
Sharing information about the services that are offered are vendors Bay Clinic, UHH-Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy for blood pressure screening, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) on disaster responses, the Hamakua Coast Communities FCU, HMSA, HOPE Services, Hospice of Hilo, the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for Keiki ID, Community Policing Program, the Pepeekeo Volunteer Firefighters, the Coordinated Services of Elderly Activities Division for Senior ID, the Department of Health on suicide prevention, and the American Cancer Society with sun bead make-and-take kits for the first 100 visitors to the booth. This activity-filled day will surely offer you the added opportunity of adding to your chest of knowledge!

The Rural South Hilo Community Associations upcoming meeting on Sept. 10 will include in addition to crime prevention a presentation from Cas Vanderwoude from Hawaii Ant Lab, Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit, University of Hawaii. Come and find out how to deal with these nasty bugs, the fire ants. Cas will provide information on fire ants and assisting the community in methods of control. Fire ants have been infesting homes in Papaikou and Pepeekeo.

The Peace Poster Gallery reception is this Friday, Sept. 13, 5-7 p.m. at C&J Woods in Honokaa. Join art lovers and peaceful people for a colorful display of children’s Peace Poster Contest entries from Peace Days past, and other select works of art. It’s a day of “Mindfulness for Peace in Your Daily Life,” on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hamakua Jodo Mission in Paauhau mauka. A group of meditation leaders from different disciplines will share in a panel discussion, a mindful meal and small group meditation instruction and practice sessions. The Planning Department invites you to review the draft materials supporting the Hamakua Community Development Plan. Mahalo to the libraries and community gathering places in the planning area for making reference copies of the appendices available: Honokaa Public Library, North Hawaii Education and Research Center (NHERC), Laupahoehoe Train Museum, Kulaimano Community Center, Pepeekeo and Papaikou Gym. Hard copies are also available in the Kona and Hilo Planning Department offices.
The draft materials are works-in-progress. It is expected that they will be revised as conditions change and new information becomes available. Feedback, suggested additions, updates, and corrections are welcome and encouraged.
