University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Kyndra Trevino-Scott has been selected the first Pacific West Conference Women’s Volleyball Freshman of the Week.

University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Kyndra Trevino-Scott has been selected the first Pacific West Conference Women’s Volleyball Freshman of the Week.

The conference honor was announced Monday, for the first week of matches contested Aug. 29-Sept. 8.

The 2013 season marks the first time the award is being presented in the PacWest.

Trevino-Scott, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Penryn, Calif., led the Vulcans to a 4-0 start to the season by hitting .461 in 15 sets. She totaled 49 kills in 89 attempts while committing just eight errors to rank third during the week in kill percentage in the PacWest.

She also ranked ninth in kills per set (3.27) and 10th in scoring after producing 3.90 points per set. Trevino-Scott totaled 58.5 points on 49 kills, one block solo and 17 block assists.

Defensively, Trevino-Scott was outstanding at rejecting returns. She averaged 1.20 blocks per set to rank fourth in the PacWest for the week and tied for second with the most total blocks (18) for the week in the league.

The Vulcans hosted Fort Hays State University in a preseason match on Monday night at UHH.

The Vuls also host their alumnae match on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at UHH.

In other PacWest weekly honors:

• BYU-Hawaii’s Shih Ting Chen was named the conference’s Volleyball Player of the Week.

Chen led the Seasiders to a 5-0 start while averaging a PacWest best 5.19 kills and 5.81 points per set,

For the first week of the season, Chen totaled 93 points on 83 kills, six aces, a block solo and six block assists.

• Fresno Pacific’s Hannah Butler was named the conference’s Volleyball Defender of the Week.

She led the Sunbirds to a 3-0 start while compiling 77 digs and averaging 6.42 digs per set over 14 sets.
