A hearing to determine the mental fitness of a 31-year-old carjacking suspect has been postponed.
Stanton Oshiro, court-appointed attorney for Jeremy Todd Rios, on Tuesday told Hilo District Judge Barbara Takase that two of three court-ordered evaluations by mental health professionals have been completed, but the third has not.
Takase re-scheduled Rios’ hearing for Oct. 8 at 1:30 p.m.
Rios is charged with second-degree robbery, auto theft, resisting an order to stop, reckless driving, driving while his license is suspended license, unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle, second-degree assault, second-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of fourth-degree theft and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident.
On the morning of July 30, Rios allegedly threatened and assaulted a 55-year-old man in Wainaku, leaving him with a broken rib and a nasal fracture. Shortly afterwards, he allegedly was seen flashing a firearm from a car on Kinoole Street, then broadsided a pickup truck at the corner of Ohea Street and Kilauea Ave. Police say Rios then got out of the car he was driving and into the passenger seat of a car driven by a 32-year-old woman who was stopped in traffic. He then allegedly took off in the woman’s car after she got out.
Police mounted a manhunt that closed Mauna Kea Access Road to visitors and arrested Rios at about 6:30 p.m. that evening.
Rios remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center in lieu of $61,500 bail.
