Matson pipeline leaks molasses into Oahu harbor
HONOLULU (AP) — The state Department of Health says hundreds of thousands of gallons of molasses may have spilled in Honolulu Harbor and Keehi Lagoon.
The department is advising the public to stay out of the water if a brown color is noticeable because the spill is killing fish, which could attract sharks, barracuda and eels.
The molasses could also encourage unusual marine algae or harmful bacteria to grow.
The department says shipping company Matson Navigation Co. found a leak in its molasses pipeline near Pier 52 and is working to patch the line. The company told the state more than 230,000 gallons of molasses may have entered the harbor.
Emergency response crews are collecting dead fish. State officials are collecting water samples to monitor the plume.
