A 27-year-old man apparently drowned Friday afternoon in the ocean off the Hamakua Coast.
According to a written Fire Department statement, rescue units and a county helicopter responded at 1:48 p.m. to a report of a swimmer in distress near an area near Honokaa called Kawela’s.
The helicopter deployed a rescue swimmer who retrieved the unconscious victim, who was not identified. He was taken to the emergency room at Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua and was later pronounced dead.
