Semifinalist for Merit Scholarship

Madison Inman, a senior at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, has been named a semifinalist in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Inman will continue in the competition for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million that will be offered next spring. Inman, the daughter of Jefferson and Lois Inman of Waimea, is an active member of the HPA community. She is student council treasurer and Spanish Club president. She also is a student ambassador and a member of the wrestling team.

Deadline near for internship program

Friday is the final day for island high school students to submit applications for the week-long High School Agricultural Internship Program Oct. 7-11 at The Kohala Center’s Ka Hua ‘Aina farm in Honokaa.

Interns will gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and learn about island food systems. They will visit and work on farms, and will earn a stipend for the farm work. The program also includes field trips to island farms, processors, wholesalers and the opportunity to meet agricultural leaders.

Broadcasters group gives scholarships

The Hawaii Association of Broadcasters Inc. has awarded $45,250 in academic scholarships to assist students in their pursuit of college study and their career goal of working in the broadcast industry in Hawaii. High school seniors and college students with at least a 2.5 grade point average and the desire to work in the broadcast industry in Hawaii upon completion of school were eligible for awards. The application process required a completed application form, a letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher, and a personal interview with the HAB scholarship committee.
