The annual Big Island Catechist Retreat Sept. 14 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Hall drew 52 attendees from seven parishes.
Sister Irene Regina Hoernschemeyer was the presenter of Pope John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body.” Sister Fay Pele, also from Daughters of St. Paul, provided a selection of books, CDs, DVDs and sacramentals from the Honolulu bookshop.
Daughters of St. Paul is an order of nuns founded in 1915 in Italy and is now in 14 cities in the United States. They use all-new media for spreading the Gospel.
“The workshop reminded us of the modesty before original sin and took us on a journey of Pope John Paul II’s teachings over a four-year period that the body and soul are together forever and that all persons are made in the image of God,” said a spokesman. “We are created to love and be loved. True love must be 1. fundamental, 2. free, 3. full, 4. faithful, and 5. fruitful. We learned that we must view the world with new eyes and a new heart, treating everyone we encounter with a new respect for their body and soul. We must use our sacred traditions, sacred scripture and God’s word in our work.
Jayne Mondoy, the Diocese of Honolulu religious education director, led the Catechists in discussing what each gained from the workshop and had the participants share ways they plan to implement what they learned in spreading the Gospel to the children and families they work with.
