A 44-year-old Captain Cook woman apparently drowned Friday afternoon in Kona’s Kua Bay.

A 44-year-old Captain Cook woman apparently drowned Friday afternoon in Kona’s Kua Bay.

Police identified her as Carol Vandermyden.

According to a written Fire Department statement, Vandermyden and her husband were at the beach and Vandermyden was found floating face down in the water. Responders to the 2:11 p.m. alarm found that bystanders had taken her from the water and initiated CPR. Medics continued the treatment but the woman was pronounced dead at Kona Hospital at 3:24 p.m..

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death, police said.
