Hawaii Pacific’s Kasey Thompson smashed 15 kills and the University of Hawaii at Hilo volleyball team was unable to overcome a slow start Saturday night at UHH Gym, suffering its fourth straight loss, 25-16, 25-15, 15-25, 25-23.
The Vulcans (5-4, 0-4 Pacific West Conference) had nearly as many attack errors (17) as kills (18) in dropping the first two sets and finished with a .086 hitting percentage.
“We keep shooting ourselves in the foot a lot,” UHH coach Tino Reyes said in a university release. “I like my team, we don’t give up.
“We’ll figure out a way to get there.”
Marley Strand-Nicolaisen led the Vulcans with 11 kills on 51 swings, Allee Johnson added nine and Kyndra Trevino-Scott had eight. However, none of the freshmen were able to hit above .200. Abbey Wade posted a match-high 19 digs and freshman setter Sienna Davis compiled seven kills and 20 assists.
Thompson hit .354 for the Sea Warriors (10-2, 4-0), and Pomai Recca and Samantha Rummans each contributed 11 kills. Libero Chelsey Buyuan, a Waiakea High graduate, added 10 digs.
UHH starts a four-match mainland trip Wednesday at Fresno Pacific (6-5, 1-3).
