Corey Kozuma shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday as the University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s golf team finished in sixth place at the GolfWeek Fall Invitational in Bend, Ore.

Dalen Yamauchi led the Vulcans by tying for seventh at 12-over.

Playing in near freezing temperatures, UHH (925) finished 32 strokes behind first-place Cal State Monterey Bay.

“We did OK; not great, but OK,” coach Earl Tamiya said. “Hopefully, we can improve and get better.”

Monterey Bay’s Brandon Hortt (217) took medallist honors.

For the Vuls, Yamauchi (78-72-78) was followed by Kozuma (80-79-72) and Chris Shimomura (80-75-76), who both tied for 14th.

Kyeton Littel (81-79-79) tied for 44th and Christian Agosto (88-84-75) tied for 64th.

Concussion seminar

The Hawaii Football Club will hold a concussion awareness seminar from 6-7 p.m. today at the University of Hawaii at Hilo campus (STB-108).

Topics include concussion recognition, return to play protocol, concussion cases in Hawaii and concussion management.

Yeshua boxing card

is on tap Oct. 12

The Yeshua Outreach Center in Keaau will be hosting a USA Boxing-sanctioned boxing event at 6 p.m. Oct. 12th.

Boxers from the Big Island as well as other clubs from across the state will be competing in the event at the Sure Foundation Church gym, located on the corner of Pohaku Circle and Pahoa Highway.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for ages 11-17, with children under 10 free.

HIGA tournament

tees off Oct. 27

The Hawaii Island Golf Association will hold a six-person team tournament Oct. 27 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

All eligible players must be HIGA members, and to qualify all players must have had their HIGA handicap index posted by Oct. 1.

The first 24 teams entered by the Oct. 22 deadline will be eligible to play in the competition, and the entry fee is $120 per team.

The fee covers the cost of a bento lunch at Kim’s restaurant at Muni and part of cash prizes for winning teams and individuals. Green fees and golf cart charges are not included in the entry fee.

I.K.L. championships

are Nov. 2 in Kona

The Kona Branch of the International Karate League will host its 9th annual I.K.L. Karate Championship from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona.

Branches from Hilo, Paauilo, Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Waikoloa, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Kealakehe, Pahala, Keaau, Oahu and California are scheduled to attend the event.

Featuring special guest Walter Nishioka, founder and chief instructor of IKL Shihan on Oahu, the tournament will feature competition in kata (forms), kumite (sparring) and kobudo (weaponry) for children, teenagers and adults.

The tournament is open to the public and admission is free.

Two teams are being sought to fill out the field for a 30 and over men’s basketball tournament.

East Hawaii tennis

league starts Oct. 19

The East Hawaii District Tennis Association’s Ekolu League season will run from Oct. 19 through Dec. 22. The league consists of one men’s, one women’s and one mixed doubles per match.

Keiki Triathlon

will be held Oct. 19

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold its second annual Keiki Triathlon at Kona Community Aquatic Center and Old Kona Airport Park.

The entrance fee is $5, and enrollment will be limited to the first 30 children who sign up in each of the four age-group categories for an event that consists of a 100-yard swim, a 3.2-mile bicycle race and a mile-long run. Participants in the 7- and 8-year-old division will race half those distances.

Registration will end on Friday, and forms are available online at www.hawaiicounty.gov/parks-and-recreation.

They also can be obtained from noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at county offices in Hilo, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa, Waimea and Kapaau.
