During the week of Sept. 23-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 44 motorists for drunken driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Five were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 20; South Hilo, 10; Puna and South Kohala, seven each.
So far this year, there have been 984 DUI arrests compared to 1,057 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.9 percent.
There have been 1,021 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,096 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been 23 official traffic fatalities compared to 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 23.3 percent.
To date, 12 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: five to drugs; one to alcohol; and six, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
