Lindsey Poulson scored off a penalty kick in the second half and goalie Jenna Hufford recorded a shutout as the University of Hawaii at Hilo edged Dixie State 1-0 on Saturday.
The Pacific West Conference women’s soccer match was played in St. George, Utah.
In the men’s match, the host Red Storm and visiting Vulcans fought to a 3-3 tie.
“This is a great rebound for our girls and to get back on the winning track,” said Lance Thompson, the UHH Director of Soccer who coaches both the women’s and men’s squads.
“Lindsey (Poulson) made it count on the penalty kick and Jenna (Hufford) did a great job in goal, including stopping a penalty kick in the first half.”
Poulson’s goal came at the 60:49 mark.
Hufford went the distance in goal, with four saves. Stacie Gubler also played 90 minutes in the net for the Red Storm. She gave up Poulson’s goal to go along with four saves.
Dixie State outshot UHH 10-6 on goal, including 5-3 in each half.
Men
• UHH 3, Dixie State 3: The Vulcans (3-4-1, 1-3-1) let a potential victory slip through their fingers against the Red Storm (2-5-3, 1-4-2).
“We blew a 2-0 lead and then after they tied it, we regained the lead in the 85th minute,” Thompson said. “But we couldn’t clear the ball out and they scored with :48 left in regulation to tie it.”
The teams then battle through two scoreless overtimes before finishing in the 3-3 deadlock.
UHH took a 2-0 lead at the half with Anthony Novella scoring goals at the 31:50 mark off an assist from David Robinson and then an unassisted goal at 34:35.
But the Red Storm got goals from Joshua Cook (67:46) and Bobby Schwarzkopf (79:20) to tie the score at 2-2.
The Vulcans grabbed a 3-2 advantage on James Yamane’s 20-yard unassisted goal off a free kick at 84:58. However, the hustling hosts tied the match at 3-3 on Jara Eshete’s goal at 89:28.
UHH goalie Yonha Andrabi went all 110 minutes, allowing three goals to go along with six saves. Dixie State used Tyler Walters (45:00) and Spencer Anderson (65:00) in goal. Walters gave up two goals and had two saves; Anderson, a goal, and added three saves.
Dixie State outshot UHH 24-13 on goal, including 9-4 in the first half and 11-7 in the second half.
Saturday’s matches closed a four-match roadtrip for the Vulcans.
“It’s good that we ended on a more positive note than what the trip started on,” said Thompson, noting the Vulcan teams had lost the three previous matches on the trip.
The UHH teams return home and host Fresno Pacific in men’s and women’s matches on Oct. 12 at the UHH Baseball Complex.
