The University of Hawaii is seeking crew members for a new project that will test the limits of social cohesion during a long space voyage.
The project will take place on the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation site at the 8,200-foot level on Mauna Loa.
Crew members will live in the same dome habitat used recently for the Mars food study.
The project seeks to observe how technical, social and task roles evolve over a long-duration; establish baselines for cognitive, social and emotional factors; and test a hypothesis that group cohesion over the short term predicts team performance in the long run.
The results will help researchers to recommend strategies for crew composition and how to support crews while in space.
The project will consist of three missions of four, eight and 12 months in length from February 2014 to May 2016.
Applicants must be between 21 and 65 years old and have at least an undergraduate degree in science, among other requirements.
The deadline to apply is Nov. 1.
