A record 1,441 fairgoers voted for their favorites at the recent Hilo Photography Club exhibit at the Hawaii County Fair. The display featured a collection of members’ photographs and encouraged judging by fair attendees. Everyone got one vote, even 6-year-olds. Gov. Neil Abercrombie even stopped by to view the photos. This year’s winner (pictured above), with 182 votes, was Ken Goodrich’s “A Girl with Her Friend,” taken in Mexico in 1970 when he was commissioned to photograph the Otomi people of Tlacotlapilco in the tiny village in the Hidalgo desert. At one isolated house he photographed each of the children of the family with their favorite animal. Goodrich said he found “this little girl and her sheep especially touching.” Second place, with 95 votes, went to the photo “Hilo’s Secret Spring” by Lynn Nakkim. Third place was a tie, with 91 votes each, between Christian James’ “Egret Dance” and Tom Whitney’s “Celebrating the Hawaiian Culture.” Jay Karai’s “King Fisher,” took fourth place with 89 votes.
