Throughout the month of October, Big Island Filipinos will be celebrating Filipino-American Heritage Month. The month was designated by the Hawaii State Legislature in 2008, and Filipinos have been conducting activities annually across the state.
Throughout the month of October, Big Island Filipinos will be celebrating Filipino-American Heritage Month. The month was designated by the Hawaii State Legislature in 2008, and Filipinos have been conducting activities annually across the state.
The Big Island Filipino Community Council kicked off the festivities on Sunday at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Campus Center Dining Room.
Highlights included competitions in song and ballroom and Filipino folk dancing.
On Thursday, a Barrio Fiesta will be held at the UH-Hilo Campus Center Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a procession of Filipino fashionwear, entertainment, food samples, games, a dance contest and information booths. The public is invited to this free event. There is a $3 parking fee if you plan to park on the university campus. Parking is limited, so come early.
