During the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, 7; Puna and Ka‘u, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 1,005 DUI arrests compared to 1,084 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.3 percent.
There have been 1,041 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,120 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.1 percent.
So far this year, there have been 23 official traffic fatalities compared to 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 23.3 percent.
To date, 12 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: five to drugs; one to alcohol; and six, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
