The Filipino-American Heritage Month Committee invites the public to three activities on the University of Hawaii at Hilo campus. A photo exhibit is on display at the Mookini Library throughout October. The photos depict everyday living in a Big Island Filipino plantation camp.

The Filipino-American Heritage Month Committee invites the public to three activities on the University of Hawaii at Hilo campus. A photo exhibit is on display at the Mookini Library throughout October. The photos depict everyday living in a Big Island Filipino plantation camp.

The second activity takes place on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Professor Roderick Labrador from UH-Manoa will speak on the “Empire of Funk: Hip Hop in Filipino/a America.” The presentation will be held in the Science and Technology Building, Room 108. Parking is available behind the building. The road across from the Hilo Baptist Church on Lanikaula Street is the best place to enter the campus.

The last activity for the month will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Hale Kehau Dormitory Turn Around from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “Drizzle” will feature Philippine dances by the UH-Hilo/Hawaii Community College Bayanihan Club and the Big Island Filipino Community Council. Parking is available behind the dormitory on Lanikaula.

Parking is free after 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the Labrador presentation and at the Drizzle.

All activities held throughout October are sponsored by the Filipino-American Heritage Month Committee, the UHH Diversity Committee, the Student Activities Council, the Residence Hall Association, the Big Island Filipino Community Council, the UH Foundation Filipino Fund, the Filipino Certificate Program, and the Minority Access and Achievement Program.
