Kamehameha and Hawaii Prep claimed Big Island Interscholastic Federation volleyball championships Saturday night at the Koaia Gym on the Kamehameha campus is Keaau.
In the Division I final, Kamehameha topped Hilo 25-16, 25-16, 27-25 for the host Warriors’ fourth straight D-I title. Members of the Warriors include Cashman Aiu, Kayla Flores, Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo, Khaila Moke-Sakamoto, Duchess Rapoza, Kaiu Ahuna, Jeyci Kaili, Tiana Klask, Zoe Leonard, Ili Nakamoto, Maraea O’Conner, Keala Watson, Pua Wong, Harley Woolsey, Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker, Chela Shiroma, Kaui Cabatu and Kylie Yoshimura. Kyle Kaaa is the head coach with assistants Jen Kaaa and Chris Leonard.
Kamehameha and runner-up Hilo will play in the state D-I tournament, scheduled Oct. 29-Nov. 1 at the Kamehameha and Keaau high school gyms.
In the Division II final, Hawaii Prep fought past Konawaena 25-20, 25-23, 13-25, 18-25, 15-12 to pocket the title and the league’s top seed in the state tournamen, slated Oct. 29-Nov. 1 on Oahu, at the McKinley and Kaimuki gyms.
Members of Ka Makani include Morgan Monahan, Courtney Barro-Kilmede, Anna Juan, Carina Verhulsdonk, Gabbie Ewing, Asia Kaden, Seychelle Francis, Alaina Bradley, Tiana Reynolds, Kawena Lim-Samura, Tehane Reynolds, Tiana Bertelmann-Tabac. Sharon Peterson is the head coach and Nicky Reynolds the assistant.
HPA, runner-up Konawaena and third-place Pahoa will play in the state D-II tournament. It’s the first time the Dagger girls have reached the state volleyball since 1979, when current Pahoa head coach Eden Scanlan was a standout player on the varsity squad.
