The Knights of Columbus are revitalizing and expanding their “Knight’s Harvest” program for West Hawaii residents. This program gathers fresh food from residents’ trees and gardens, while assisting local hunger programs with donations of fruits and vegetables. Once they are contacted, the Knights of Columbus will come to your location, pick your produce and deliver to local agencies with feeding programs such as The Food Basket, Inc. and HOPE Services’ “The Friendly Place.”
“It is a shame that we’ve begun to see food on trees and in gardens as ‘rubbish’ or ‘waste’ that needs to be cleaned up,” said Food Basket Executive Director En Young. “We’re so thankful the Knights of Columbus and their volunteers are helping us fulfill our mission of preventing the waste of edible food on Hawaii Island.”
This spring the program resulted in the donation of 2,000 pounds of fresh food. With Thanksgiving and the holidays nearing, The Knights of Columbus are looking forward to again harvesting on behalf of the community.
