again at state meet
For the third time in four seasons, the Hawaii Prep girls placed second at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association cross country championships.
Ka Makani’s Mariah Haight was the highest Big Island Interscholastic Federation finisher in sixth place and teammate Kristiana Van Pernis was eighth Friday at the state meet on Kauai.
Kamehameha-Hawaii was second in the Division II field.
Seabury Hall’s Dakota Gossman won her fourth straight crown, while Punahou took the team title.
In the boys race, Honokaa was 11th overall and second among Division II schools in the competition,
BIIF champion Ian McQuate’s 12th-place finish was the best among island competitors, while Kohala Josiah Adams was 13th.

Warriors seeded
third at states
Big Island Interscholasti Fdederation champion Kamehameha drew the third seed for the Hawaii High School Atheltic Association Division I volleyball championships.
BIIF runner-up Hilo High opens play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kamehameha’s Keaau campus in a first-round match against Kahuku of the Oahu Interscholastic Association.
The winner faces top-seeded Kamehameha-Kapalama on Wednesday. On that same day at Keaau High, the BIIF’s Warriors await the winner of a Tuesday match between Punahou and Farrington.
Pop Warner to hold
cheer meet, playoffs
Pop Warner will hold its regional cheering competition today, and the doors open at 10:30 a.m. at Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium.
The participating teams are the Hamakua Cougars, Panaewa Alii, Puna Panthers, Waimea Cowboys and Westside Eagles.
Pop Warner will begin its football playoffs on Sunday at Hulani Park in Keaukaha.
Correction
Waiakea offensive lineman Zachary Devela was given credit for the final touchdown by team officials in last Saturday Big Island Interscholastic Federation football game between the Warriors and Kealakehe.
An incorrect player was credited with the score in the Oct. 21 edition.
