HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s top law enforcement officers are being honored by a coalition of agencies in the state.
Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kaneshiro won the Law Enforcement/Security Coalition of Hawaii’s top award at a banquet on Thursday. A letter from the coalition says the award is presented for outstanding service and activity that benefits law enforcement, private security or criminal justice.
Kaneshiro congratulated other honorees by saying law enforcement is a truly noble profession.
Other honorees include an NCIS special agent who investigated a case in which three Pearl Harbor shipyard employees were accused of trying to sell 30,000 pounds of government scrap metal worth about $1 million.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Beverly Wee Sameshima won an award for earning a conviction against a couple who ran a large cockfighting operation in Waianae.
Hawaii teacher of year named
HONOLULU (AP) — A Waikiki Elementary math and science teacher has won Hawaii’s teacher of the year award.
Matthew Lawrence was honored with the award at a ceremony Friday at Washington Place.
Lawrence was picked from seven district teachers of the year for his hands-on methods at the school, including using climbing walls and solar-powered go-carts.
Lawrence wins a one-year car lease, a $1,000 cash award, classroom technology and will represent Hawaii at the National Teacher of the Year Program in the spring. Lawrence also won other prizes given to other district winners.
He has taught at Waikiki Elementary since 2001 and is a mentor teacher in the University of Hawaii’s undergraduate teaching program.
