Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. So far this year, there have been 1,069 DUI arrests compared with 1,200 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.9 percent. There have been 1,105 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,213 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.9 percent.
So far this year, there were 23 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 35 during the same period last year, a decrease of 34.3 percent. To date, 13 fatalities were related to drugs (5), alcohol (2), or a combination of both (6). DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
