University of Hawaii at Hilo coach Tino Reyes sees one constant when his volleyball team plays on the road: inconsistency.
The Vulcans remained winless away from home Wednesday, falling 25-16, 25-16, 27-25 to Dixie State in St. George, Utah.
“We haven’t learned to play on the road,” Reyes said. “We get rattled and we get rattled quickly.
“We can’t pass the ball on the road.”
UHH (10-12, 5-12 Pacific West Conference) had its four-match win streak broken and is now 0-7 on the road.
Several players put up big numbers for the Red Storm (15-8, 12-5): Nicole Koehler went error-less in smacking 11 kills on 22 attempts, Makenzi Bird compiled 10 kills on 14 swings and hit .714, and Maddie Rex led the way with 15 kills.
The Vulcans sorely missed senior defensive specialist Kelia Parrilla, who was unable to join the team on their season-ending road trip because of school obligations. Playing without their best server, the Vulcans didn’t finish with an ace and made five errors behind the line. Dixie State finished with five of each.
Callie Aberle compiled 14 kills and 14 digs and Allee Johnson added eight kills for UHH, which was outhit .297-.244.
The Vulcans had two chances to put away Game 3, but Shannon Young (10 kills) put down three points and a kill by Rex ended the match.
UHH visits Azusa Pacific on Friday.
