Practical Agriculture for Hamakua will host its fourth fall presentation — “Saving and Selecting Seeds” by Russell Nagata of the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources — on Monday, Nov. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School.
The fundamentals of seed saving and selecting, in support of being seed independent, will be presented.
“The basic botany of plants and seed biology will be referenced to how they affect your seed production goals. Parameters essential in maintaining a variety’s identity such as how many plants to save from, isolation distance and other topics will be covered,” said spokesman KiTeya Belford-Smith. “Examples of specific methods to control pollen flow will be provided.”
There will be a $10 materials fee for adults, $5 for seniors age 60 and up and students with valid student ID. Please arrive 15 minutes early to register. Pre-registration is not required. For directions, please see the PAH website, www.practicalagricultureforhamakua.com.
