Christy Cain hammered 13 kills and Mattie Shelford had 12 to lead Azusa Pacific University to a 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 win over the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Friday night.

The Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match was played in Azusa, Calif.

Host APU improved to 18-8 overall and 10-6 in the PacWest. The young Vulcans, with only one senior on coach Tino Reyes’ roster, fell to 10-13 and 5-13, respectively.

Freshman Marley Strand-Nicolaisen and Kyndra Trevino-Scott each had 10 kills to lead UHH. Setter Sienna Davis finished with 30 assists.

But ASU’s strong hitting — .286 for the match compared to the Vuls’ .171 — plus more consistent play sparked to the three-game sweep.

“We just made more errors than they did,” Reyes said. “Our serving-and-receiving wasn’t very good. It’s hard to win when we don’t play consistent and we don’t pass well.”

The Vulcans play at Cal Baptist tonight in Riverside, Calif. It’s is UHH’s third match on a four-game road trip. The Vuls finish their season at Chaminade University on Nov. 16 in Honolulu.
