Queen Leinaale “Aunty Ala” Akiu, 72, of Waiohinu died Oct. 24 at her residence. Born in Waiohinu, she was member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Ka’u Ward), a retired custodian for the Naalehu Elementary and Intermediate School, a silk screener at the Alfred Shaheen Shirt Factory, and a packer at the Dole cannery on Oahu. Henry “Sonny” Alameda Sr., 84, of Ahualoa died Oct. 21 at home. Born in Ahualoa, he retired from the County of Hawaii Public Works Highway Maintenance Division, was a hog farmer, and worked for Andrade Service. Marinus “Martin” Gutteling, 93, of Keaau died Nov. 5 at home. Born in Buitenzorg (Bogor), Java, Dutch East Indies, he was a retired architect, served in the Dutch resistance, was a member of the Stichting 1940-1945, was OVW Sergeant in the Koninklijke Landmact, 7 December Division, serving as an engineer and was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Royal Institute of British Architects, and the Pahoa Chess Club. Services to be held Saturday at the Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Mass at 8 a.m. with celebration of life to follow. Casual attire. Brandon Anthony Kalani “Java” Javellana, 28, of Pahoa died Oct. 26 at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as a petty officer second class and Search and Rescue swimmer.
