The faculty and staff at Keaau Elementary School thank myriad people and organizations that helped make the November Kukini no ke Ola (Health and Wellness Expo) a gigantic success for their 840 PreK-fifth-grade students! It was truly a collaborative event that exemplified community contributions for the betterment of our keiki.
Twenty interactive, educational stations were facilitated by school counselors and representatives of Kaiser Permanente, UH-Hilo College of Pharmacy associates, Hilo Medical Center, American Heart Association, UH-Manoa, Bay Clinic, American Cancer Society, Hawaii County Fire Department, Kamehameha-Hawaii, Hui Malama Ola Na’Oiwi’s Edna Baldado, Hawaii Police Department and public health nurses. Many other individuals helped in many ways.
Every student completed the mile run while being cheered on by emcee Eddie Ombac and the taiko drummers of Keaau High School. Throughout the campus, manning aid stations, chaperoning classes, and helping as course marshals were volunteer high school students from various groups at KHS and Waiakea High’s Leo Club. These seventy-five teens were an amazing support system. We are immensely grateful to their advisors, teachers and principals for helping recruit and accompany them to the event.
To help off-set the costs of this event, Keaau Elementary wishes to extend a sincere mahalo to our generous donors: ING’s Run for Something Better Grant, W.H. Shipman, KTA-Puainako, Airgas-Hilo and Wal-Mart-Hilo.
