In October, the student essay award recipients and outstanding pro bono attorneys were honored at the 2013 Pro Bono Celebration sponsored by the Hawaii Access to Justice Commission and the Hawaii State Bar Association held at the Hawaii Supreme Court Courtroom in Honolulu.
The essay contest titled “Meaningful Volunteering and What It Means to Me” was open to students in grades 10-12 and required the students to describe meaningful volunteering, why it is important, and what it personally means to them.
The essay award recipients were Tram Ha, Moanalua High School; Christopher Kim, Maui High School; Da Hea Kim, Mid Pacific Institute; Zane Kunimura, Waiakea High School; Casey Nakamura, Kapaa High School, and Benjamin Steeper, Aiea High School. Each student received a cash award of $500, donated by six law firms: Coates & Frey; Cades Schutte; Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel; Ashford & Wriston; Bays Lung Rose & Holma; and Case Lombardi & Pettit.
Third Circuit Court Chief Judge Ronald Ibarra, who is also a commissioner on the Hawaii Access to Justice Commission, was present during the ceremony. Rep. Clifford Tsuji congratulated Kunimura and his parents, Clyde and Vivian Kunimura.
