Applications are being accepted for the East Hawaii 2014 Master Gardener Program training sponsored by the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Cooperative Extension Service (CES).

The UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources CES is now accepting applications for its spring classes. Participants will meet twice weekly, as 40-plus hours of training is provided by UH Extension agents, specialists and researchers. In return, trainees will contribute an equal amount of volunteer time to CES. Successful completion of the program will certify individuals as Master Gardeners.

CES is accepting applications through Dec. 6. For details, please visit www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/UHMG/EastHI/index.asp, or contact Andrew Kawabata at 981-5199 or kawabataa@ctahr.hawaii.edu or Sharon Motomura at smotomur@hawaii.edu.

What is a Master Gardener? Gardeners today are faced with a multitude of choices in gardening products and pest management activities. The Master Gardener training program provides scientific based information so Master Gardeners and the people they assist can make informed decisions.

Master Gardeners extend this knowledge by staffing booths at county fairs and local farmer’s markets, hosting plant clinics at community centers, developing community gardens, operating help lines at county offices and answering telephone requests for information by the gardening public. Master Gardeners are among the most valuable assets that contribute to the overall goals of the Extension Service, and that is to serve the people of Hawaii.
