On Oct. 24, Waiakea High School students and staff celebrated Get Your PINK On! in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“Pink attire and accessories were abundant on campus and many students participated in Zumba to shake off breast cancer,” said chairperson Erica Wells. Pumped-up Zumba instructor Alexis Cabrera, a junior at WHS, led the energetic students during the lunch-time activity.
In conjunction with the Breast Cancer Awareness activity, juniors Miles Marshall and Brelyn Iwasaki chaired a Penny War between grade levels for Make a Difference Day.
“The challenge was on and a lot of students contributed to the Penny War. It was very successful,” said Iwasaki.
“Pennies were worth one point, and other coins and bills were minus points. Daily winners were announced, which made the ‘war’ between classes a lot more competitive and fun,” added Marshall.
“The Penny War was a huge success. We topped our $250 goal three times over as we raised a total of $766.12 during four 30-minute recesses. We truly appreciate all of the donations as the money will be donated to breast cancer awareness and screening,” said Iwasaki.
