HONOLULU (AP) — The cost of shipping to Hawaii is going up again.
Matson Inc. told customers Monday the cost of shipping containers will increase next year by 5.5 percent.
The cost of shipping a container from the mainland to Hawaii will rise by $175 and a terminal handing charge will increase by $50.
Matson is the primary ocean cargo transporter to Hawaii.
The company said the increased shipping cost translates into an additional 10 cents in expense for a 20-pound bag of rice and another 3 cents for a six-pack of canned beverages.
The increase will be the third in three years.
Matson said it’s also raising fees for shipping to Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and Micronesia.
