Hilo Coffee Mill is at 17-995 Volcano Road, aka Highway 11, between the 12- and 13-mile markers.
The University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Risk Management Hawaii (RMH) program is conducting informational workshops about the borer (CBB). CBB is a major production and financial risk coffee growers on the Big Island have battled since its arrival in 2010. This pest was recently found in Hilo in the Amau‘ulu area and in Waipio Valley.
CTAHR’s Coffee and Orchard Crops Extension Agent Andrea Kawabata will teach farmers about integrated pest management, including preventing new CBB introductions, ensuring field sanitation and monitoring. IPM is an approach of using a combination of practices environmentally friendly and effective at mitigating such problems as diseases and pests.
CTAHR will also discuss risk management and crop insurance policies available to growers for coffee and coffee trees. Hawaii Department of Agriculture representatives will be present to answer questions and to give an update on the CBB situation. There will be a talk-story session for questions and answers during and after the presentations.
