A man was killed Friday when his semitrailer rolled over on the new Daniel K. Inouye Highway Friday afternoon in South Kohala.
The man, whose age and place of residence was not available as of press time on Friday, was operating a large, semitrailer-type service truck and headed westbound on the highway, also known as the new Saddle Road, when he apparently lost control and overturned, the Hawaii County Police Department said. The crash was reported shortly after noon.
The driver left the roadway about 1/4 mile from the highway’s intersection with Highway 190, also known as Mamalahoa Highway, according to police. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Police closed the eastbound lane of the Daniel K. Inouye Highway shortly after the crash was reported while fire rescue personnel and Traffic Enforcement Unit investigators were on the scene. The westbound lane remained open throughout the investigation.
The Daniel K. Inouye Highway reopened to both directions of travel around 3:30 p.m.
Police were unable to provide any further information on the crash as of press time on Friday.
