Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center’s eighth annual recognition dinner and auction was “our best ever,” according to Executive Director Julie Mitchell. The Nov. 10 benefit raised more than $15,000 in much-needed funds for the nonprofit human services agency.
“On behalf of our community mediation center, I want to give big ‘mahalos’ to everyone who made this fundraiser possible, from our generous auction donors to the various folks who donated their time and money to contribute to its success,” Mitchell said. “Thanks are also in order to our board of directors, the Hawaii County Bar Association, and the approximately 150 ticket buyers and attendees. It was quite a lively crowd.”
At the event, District Court judges Harry Freitas and Barbara Takase were honored by Ku‘ikahi with “Peacemaker Awards” for their support of alternate dispute resolution. Family Court Judge Anthony Bartholomew was honored by the Bar Association.
Newton Chu emceed the event, roasted the honorees, and acted as auctioneer. Floral Resources, Geraldine Hasegawa and Sandra Song provided flowers that decorated the tables and used as door prizes. Larry Conklin donated solo guitar music, Hawai’i Printing Corporation donated ticket printing and Cunningham Gallery and Koa Hawaiiana donated restoration of auction items. Some 70 businesses and individuals contributed auction items and helped in a variety of ways.
“Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center’s mission is to empower people to come together — to talk and to listen, to explore options, and to find their own best solutions,” Mitchell said. “To achieve this mission, Ku‘ikahi offers mediation, facilitation and training to strengthen the ability of diverse individuals and groups to resolve interpersonal conflicts and community issues.”
