Pearl Harbor survivors feted
HONOLULU (AP) — A little rain failed to deter thousands of people from showing up Friday night at the annual Waikiki Holiday Parade.
In its 15th year, the event celebrates those who survived Japan’s 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
Hundreds of people lined Kalakaua Avenue to watch the parade, which is traditionally held the day after Thanksgiving.
Among those who attended were six World War II veterans, including four from Hawaii.
Delton Walling, 92, of Wallace, Calif., was the grand marshal. The Navy veteran was 19 years old and witnessed the attack from a communication tower.
Gay marriage celebration set
HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu’s mayor will be hosting “Family Day” at Thomas Square to celebrate the first same-sex marriages in the state.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s event today from noon to 4 p.m. is scheduled to take place hours before same-sex couples in Hawaii will be allowed to legally marry after midnight.
The event will include a bounce house for children and entertainment by the Royal Hawaiian Band and the Gay Men’s Chorus of Honolulu. The mayor’s office says there will be an information tent for midnight ceremonies.
Organizers of a midnight same-sex marriage ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki say they’re dubbing the mayor’s event a “rehearsal luncheon.”
The Hawaii Marriage Equality Act goes into effect on Monday.

Maui truck crash
HONOLULU (AP) — Maui County police say a Makawao driver was killed when her pickup left the roadway on Pau Hana Road.
Police said Giuliana Johnson, 26, died in the crash at about 1:40 p.m. Thursday.
Johnson was driving a small pickup south on the road and missed a curve. The truck crashed through a fence in front of a home and struck an unoccupied vehicle.
Johnson died at the scene.
She was not wearing a seat belt and the air bag in her truck was not activated.
Police say high speed may have been a factor in the crash.
