During the week of Nov. 25-Dec. 1, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunken driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; South Hilo, 5; Puna, 3; North Hilo, Hamakua and Ka‘u, 1 each.
There have been 1,219 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,352 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been 25 official traffic fatalities compared to 37 during the same period last year, a decrease of 32.4 percent.
To date, 13 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: five to drugs; two to alcohol; and six, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
