At the beginning of the preseason, Honokaa coach Daphne Honma told her girls basketball team she wanted the Dragons to be able to compete against Division I foes. On opening night of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation regular season, Honokaa did that and more.
Chancis Fernandez scored 18 points and Shemika Frazier produced 15 on Tuesday night as the Dragons overpowered Waiakea 68-44 at Honokaa Armory.
Eliyah Fernandez added 11 points for the Dragons, who reached the finals of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II tournament last season. The bulk of that team returned this season, while the Fernandez sisters were making their Honokaa debuts after sitting out last season as transfers from Hawaii Prep.
“They played well and did a lot of positive things,” said Honma, who is in first season back at the helm of the Dragons. “I think we still have long ways to go. We played well enough to win. Waiakea was tough.”
Shaila Apele and Nicole Antonio both scored 11 points for the Warriors, who never recovered after Honokaa opened up a double-digit lead in the first quarter.
In junior varsity, Honokaa won 60-38.

Kohala 60, Keaau 42: Tezrah Antonio tallied 18 points in the Cowgirls decisive win over the visiting Cougars.
Aina Padastao had 22 points for Keaau in the losing effort.
Konawaena 61, Pahoa 20: Chanelle Molina scored 24 points and Celena Molina tallied 19 as the five-time defending BIIF Division I champion Wildcats cruised at home in their opener.
Jasmine Perea chipped in with 10 points for Konawaena, which led 40-9 at halftime.
Randi Berinobis powered the Daggers with 11 points.
