A Waiakea High School junior is among six recipients of a $500 cash award for an essay contest on meaningful volunteering.
Zane Kunimura received his award, as well as a certificate of achievement, Oct. 24 at the Hawaii Supreme Court courtroom in Honolulu. The awards were presented by Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald, Associate Justices Simeon Acoba and Daniel Foley and Hawaii State Bar Association President Craig Wagnild.
The essay contest, open to students in grades 10-12, was sponsored by the Hawaii Access to Justice Commission and the Hawaii State Bar Association as part of National Pro Bono Week, the purpose of which is to raise awareness about the increased need for free legal services, especially during difficult economic times. The cash awards were donated by each of the following six law firms: Coates &Frey; Cades Schutte; Goodsill Anderson Quinn &Stifel; Ashford &Wriston; Bays Lung Rose &Holma; and Case Lombardi &Pettit.
