PEARL HARBOR (AP) — The U.S. Pacific Fleet’s commander is hailing the first overseas deployment of the Navy’s newest ship.
Adm. Harry Harris, Jr. said the USS Freedom’s recent eight-month assignment to Singapore demonstrated the U.S. commitment to focus on Asia and the Pacific.
The Freedom encountered some mechanical problems that kept it in port for part of its time abroad.
But Harris said in an interview Thursday the problems taught the Navy lessons about what parts of the ship fail more often. He said this will help the Navy decide what spare parts the ship needs to keep on hand. He said the Navy will apply those lessons to future deployments.
The Freedom is a littoral combat ship, which is small enough to move among Southeast Asia’s many islands and shallow waters.
Suspect arrested
in beating death
HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the beating death of an 83-year-old man last week in Chinatown.
The suspect’s name was not immediately released by the police department announcement.
Mamerto “Eddie” Semana was found injured Dec. 4.
The homeless man suffered head injuries and was unconscious on College Walk and Kukui Street.
Police said last week he had been assaulted four hours before an ambulance was summoned. Semana was taken to a hospital. He died Dec. 5.
Man dies in fall from Maui cliff
HONOLULU (AP) — Maui police say a 59-year-old Kaupo man died in a fall from a 20- to 25-foot cliff in Kipahulu.
Philip Chang died in the fall Thursday morning. Police said Chang was cutting grass near loose soil between 10 a.m. and noon on a farm.
A co-worker found him after the fall.
Chang was pronounced dead at Hana Health Center.
Maui welcomes district judge
HONOLULU (AP) — A newly confirmed Maui district court judge will be taking an oath of office.
The state judiciary said Lloyd Poelman was sworn in Friday as a state district court judge of the Second Circuit.
Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald administered Poelman’s oath.
Poelman was nominated by Recktenwald and confirmed by the state Senate.
He will serve a term of six years.
