Dr. Robert Whitcomb Sumner-Mack, 78, of Hilo died Dec. 11 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Richmond, Va., he taught nutrition and public health at Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, and at UPenn, was district health officer for the Big Island and he directed health projects in Africa and Asia for USAID, UNDP and the World Bank, and was a Master Gardener, member of Big Island Bee Association and the Hawaii Concert Society. No formal services planned. Memorial gifts may be made to the Hawaii Concert Society for educational music programs in the schools. Survived by wife, Nan McCowan Sumner-Mack of Hilo; daughters, Laura Kirsten Mack and Danielle Prudhon Mack (Chris) Francis of Philadelphia; stepson, Drew Vaughan (Dottie Marie) Sumner of San Diego; sister, Patricia (Charles) Churchman of Virginia; four grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
