This is in response to the racist and misleading cartoon and column by George Will in the Sunday, Dec. 8, edition. The image is interchangeable with those made in the 1930s depicting Jews. Such odious images were racist and dangerous then and now.
To address the misleading part: It is Israel, not Iran, that has the nuclear warheads. Israel has between 100 and 300 nuclear warheads, about the same as Britain, according to the experts of Jane’s Defense Weekly, which deals with military information. Israel is one of the few states that has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iran has signed this treaty.
The danger to Iran, to the U.S., to the world is not Iran, but the country and countries with the nuclear warheads.
George Will quotes Kenneth Pollack of the Brookings Institution, who urges a choice of more aggressive treatment of Iran. We can be grateful that President Obama chose diplomacy and life.

Where is the joy?
Has anyone else noticed lately there are absolutely no Christmas decorations on set at our big three local TV news stations? Matter of fact, all these things have mostly disappeared from public view.
It is politically incorrect to say “Merry Christmas” now. I grew up on Oahu in Kaimuki, where the Christmas season was celebrated openly with bells and decorations over the streets, in windows everywhere, and Christmas carols over the radio. It made us all feel joy, connected to each other, and expecting good times with friends and family together.
I remember. And I miss it.

Kudos to our mayor, Billy Kenoi, for his recent signing of Bill 113 into law restricting further GMO development on the Big Island and requiring strict transparency and accountability for the existing growers of GMO crops.
I couldn’t have been prouder of our mayor as I read his statement of vision for the future of sustainable agriculture here, and I was very encouraged by his thorough understanding of the big picture and what is really at stake for the people of Hawaii and, of course, the aina. It is so evident that he truly cares. Thank you, Mayor Kenoi!
