Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Friday announced the release of more than $6 million to advance harbor improvements to two Hawaii Island harbors, according to a written statement from his office.
The money includes $6 million for Pier 1 shed modifications at Hilo Harbor, including construction of a new end wall, repaving and associated utility adjustments; 40 percent of the footprint will subsequently be used for container cargo operations, which require open yard space, while the remaining 60 percent of Pier 1 will continue to serve as covered shelter for storage, administrative and passenger operations.
In addition, $80,500 in state funds plus $241,500 in federal funds were earmarked for enhanced physical security measures and critical infrastructure, including security fencing at Kawaihae Commercial Harbor. This will separate the secured area of the commercial harbor and allow recreational users greater access to the small boat harbor.
“These priority investments in state infrastructure add further stimulus and jobs to the economy in order to build upon our state’s $1.1 billion turnaround,” Abercrombie said.
