The Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce will honor Hilo realtor Nancy Cabral as the recipient of the Bank of Hawaii and KTA Super Stores 2013 Athena Award. Cabral, president and owner of Day-Lum Inc. Real Estate, will be recognized at the Chamber’s general membership luncheon meeting on Monday, Jan. 13, in the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Moku‘ola Room. The public is invited.

The award established in 1982 is named for the “strong, courageous, enlightened goddess” Athena. It is presented to individuals who excel in their professions, give back to their communities and empower future female leaders. The Hawaii Island Chamber has named a winner annually since 1989.
Cabral has been a leader in her profession of real estate and property management for more than 30 years.
According to a chamber spokesman, “her direct, hands-on empowerment of women, not only as a role model, but specifically as an employer, offers a stable platform which has created opportunities for women to grow their own personal endeavors with confidence.”
She has served in numerous community organizations, including the Hawaii Island REALTORS®, Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center Board of Directors, Hawaii Business and Professional Women, Rotary Club of Hilo, Downtown Improvement Association and the Family Self-Sufficiency Program Coordinating Committee.
Cabral recently volunteered to help EPIC Ohana, a nonprofit organization formed to help teens aging out of foster care. She joined other leaders in our community in connecting with those young adults, assisting and guiding them through difficult issues, one of which is housing.
Last year’s Athena winner, Carol Ignacio, recently retired from the Office of Social Ministry and Affordable Housing. She had received $500 to “pay it forward” and help other women in the community. During lunch, Ignacio will discuss how she encouraged others to excel personally and professionally.
The keynote speaker at the award luncheon will be Yunji de Nies, co-anchor on the KITV4 News evening broadcasts.
She joined KITV from ABC News, where she worked most recently as a national correspondent based in Atlanta. Before that, she served as a White House correspondent for the network, covering the presidencies of Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
Those assignments took her around the world, but she always knew she wanted to come home to Hawaii.
De Nies attended Parker School and graduated with honors with a degree in political science from Yale University and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Journalism from the University of California at Berkley.
She was living and working in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina devastated the city.
