The Fall Prevention Program coordinated by Life Care Center of Hilo staffers has provided 16 six-week sessions to the community, benefiting more than 150 participants who graduated from the program by showing a true commitment to avoiding falls in their future.
“Participants all improved in their balance score by a 0.1 to 4.1 difference,” said spokeswoman Chris Ridley. “Every 10th counts at this level when you realize that a fall can lead to a costly fracture. The cost of a fracture is not just medical bills, but includes emotional and social complications, a loss of independence that can linger.”
Each participant attended six classes and completed an exercise routine daily at home. The University of Hawaii School of Pharmacy, Clinical Laboratories and the Alzheimer’s Association provided free presentations about factors to reduce falls. Life Care Center of Hilo nursing, social service, dietary and rehabilitation staffers provided information.
Those interested in the next six-week session may call 959-9151 for reservations. There is a fee of $25.
The Alzheimer’s Association has some new additions to its local library based at Life Care Center of Hilo, 944 W. Kawailani St. Children’s books and adult books are available for borrowing using an honor system. The association is accepting donations for this library.
