A sinkhole swallowed a truck Monday near Paauilo, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.
A sinkhole swallowed a truck Monday near Paauilo, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.
Darryl Oliveira, Civil Defense administrator, said the “full-sized Dodge Ram pickup” fell in the hole at about 8 a.m. on Pohakea Mauka Road. The hole was created when a culvert collapsed.
The driver was able to get out uninjured.
“If you are standing on the road, you wouldn’t see it,” he said, referring to the truck.
The road is closed as a result, isolating about 50 residents, said Fire Chief Darren Rosario.
Rosario said the county is trying to open a private road, blocked by a locked gate, to give residents access.
