Big Island Road Runners is holding it’s Hilo to Volcano 50k-ultra and 31.1-bike relay Jan. 18.
Both events start at Coconut Island and end at Cooper Center in Volcano Village.
The ultra runners start at 6 a.m. and the relay teams start at 6:30 a.m. Registration is $35 per participant until Monday, then it is $40 per participant. There is a $5 discount for current BIRR members.

football applicants
Keaau High is accepting applications for assistant football coaches.
Those interested may pick up an application at the main office daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and must be able to pass a background check with the Department of Education.

A Hawaii Government Employees Association fun day will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium.

Volleyball leagues
are forming at Hilo
The Department of Parks and Recreation at Hilo Armory is still accepting teams for its men’s and women’s volleyball league in the open and novice divisions.
The projected start date is Jan. 14 for a league that will run to mid-March and be held Tuesdays (and a few Thursdays) from 6:30-9 p.m.

Piopio volleyball

The Piopio Bears Volleyball Club will host its 12th annual invitational from Jan. 17-19 at Hilo Armory.
The following divisions for the girls and boys will be accepted: 16-under, 14U, and 12U. A 10-under coed division is being considered, depending on numbers of teams interested in entering.
Teams will be limited per division and entry fee is $50 per team, and the entry deadline is Wednesday.

Jernigan, Carvalho
share monthly honor
Kealakehe’s Cara Jernigan and Hilo’s Jalen Carvalho have been named the Big Island Athletes of the Month for December.
Jernigan set a state record in the 17-18 breaststroke during the Hawaii age-group short course swimming championships held in late December at Kona Community Aquatic Center. She swam the event in 1 minute, 3.08 seconds.
Jernigan also claimed gold in the 400 individual medley and a silver in the 200 freestyle during the championship meet.
Jernigan, a senior at Kealakehe, is the defending HHSAA champion in the 100 breaststroke.
Carvalho, a 6-foot-3 senior, led the Vikings to an 8-6 record (8-2 vs. BIIF teams) during the preseason. He had a season-high 47 points to lead the Vikings to a 67-64 win over Waiakea in the final of the St. Joseph Cardinal Classic, hitting 21 of 24 free throws and a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to win it.
He also led Hilo to a runner-up finish in the Vikings’ Holiday Prep Classic, falling 67-59 to Trinity Christian of Texas. Carvalho scored 30 points in the loss and led the tournament with 77 points in three games. He also won the tournament’s slam-dunk contest, edging two Trinity Christian players in the final.
In four preseason tournaments, Carvalho led each in scoring.
Last week in San Diego, the Vikings went 0-4. But Carvalho led the tournament in scoring with 113 points in four games, including 42 in a 67-64 loss to Wasila, Alaska. In his 42-point outburst, he hit 14 of 25 field goals, including 7 of 13 3-pointers, and 7 of 8 free throws to go along with 8 rebounds.
The Big Island Athlete of the Month program is sponsored by Don’s Grill, under owner Don Hoota. The Athlete of the Month as well as Athlete and Sportsperson of the Year programs were founded by the late Jack Matsui.
