Their teammates were better, but not by all that much.
Cold shooting was contagious for the slumping University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s basketball team, which suffered its seventh straight loss Saturday night, falling 56-50 to Dominican at UHH Gym.
The Vulcans (3-9, 0-6 Pacific West Conference) shot just 25.9 percent, including 4 of 17 from 3-point range.
Despite the ugly totals, UHH hung around and tied the game at 50 on Jeff Perkins’ three-point play with 2:38 remaining. The Vulcans had a chance to take the lead after an Owens steal, but Brandon Thomas missed a jumper and Connor Haysbert made a basket as the Penguins (11-3, 5-1 PacWest) scored the final five points of the game.
Thomas was the only Vulcan to break double figures with 11 points on 2 of 6 shooting, and Yevgeniy Dyachenko (3 of 8) added nine. UHH committed just seven turnovers, though two came in the closing minutes. Dyachenko and Dominique Campbell each grabbed eight rebounds.
UHH had opportunities at the free-throw line, where it finished a lukewarm 16 of 25.
Haysbert scored 17 points and Devin Golston had 15 points with 12 rebounds for Dominican. Each shot 7 of 12.
The Vulcans will search for their first victory since Nov. 26 when they host Point Loma at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
