On Nov. 21, during a grant presentation at Tutu’s House in Waimea, the Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua Foundation was awarded a Community Advisory Grant from Young Brothers, Ltd./Hawaiian Tug &Barge.
This grant is to replace the television in one of the communal activities rooms within the hospital. These rooms are the gathering area for activities and family visitation.
Activities are crucial for long-term care residents’ and patients’ quality of life, noted Farrah-Marie Gomes, president of the Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua Foundation, who accepted the grant from Young Brothers President Glenn Hong.
The Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua Foundation will use the Young Brothers’ grant to replace the television in the Hau‘oli Room with a new and larger model. A larger television screen will help the aging residents see programs more clearly.
Hale Ho‘ola also extends a big mahalo to Makana Loo and the entire Loo Ohana for assistance to the hospital. For his Eagle Scout Project, Makana volunteered his services to re-vamp Hale Ho‘ola’s front lobby. Makana and his team repainted the lobby of the hospital, repainted the lines in the parking lot and built and installed custom cabinets in the gift shop. Painting supplies were donated by Home Depot.
“Hale Ho‘ola wishes to extend their thanks to all involved in the project,” said Gomes.
Originally known as Honokaa Hospital, Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua has served the health care needs of the surrounding community from Waimea to Laupahoehoe since 1951. In 1997, the facility was renamed Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua, which means “Haven of Wellness in Hamakua.”
HHH is a Critical Access Hospital with 66 long-term-care beds and 11 critical-access beds which offer acute, skilled and long-term care. Hale Ho‘ola also has round-the-clock emergency room services as well as a rehabilitation department offering physical, occupational and speech therapy on an inpatient and outpatient basis. The Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua Foundation is a nonprofit organization supporting the hospital in enhancing the quality of health care to benefit the community.
