An unidentified bicyclist was killed Saturday after a collision with a semi-tractor trailer on Highway 19 just north of Pukihae Street in Hilo.

According to a release from the Hawaii County Fire Department, rescue units responded to the scene at 8:53 a.m. after an 8:47 a.m. call. Upon arrival, units found the victim on the roadway “with no signs of life.”

Both lanes of the highway through the area were shut down as workers processed the scene, and traffic was detoured onto Wainaku Street via Hau Street, across from the Wainaku Executive Center, according to the release.

The roadway was reopened to traffic about 1 p.m., according to a Hawaii Police Department advisory.

The HPD is conducting an investigation into the death, but as of press time Saturday had not returned a phone call seeking further information.
